IET Sponsored Seminar on Telemedicine

             A one-day national seminar on ‘Telemedicine’ was organised by the Department of Biomedical Engineering at SMK Fomra Institute of Technology, Chennai on February 21, 2014 to discuss the latest advances in telemedicine for solving healthcare-related problems. The seminar is sponsored by IET, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a professional organization that grants chartered engineer and professional engineer designations in the UK (Chennai Network). Dr. M. Jagannath, Professor and Head, Department of Biomedical Engineering was the Convenor, Mr. G. Gowrishankar, Assistant Professor and Mr. Ganesh Raja, Assistant Professor were the members of the Organizing Committee.

The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. F. Abubacker Sulaiman, Associate Professor, Department of Radiology and Dr. P. Thirunavukarasu, Associate Professor, Department of ENT, Chettinad Hospital, Chennai. Dr. D.N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chairman, IET, Chennai Network, Dr. T. Srinivasan, Executive Council Member, IET, Chennai Network and Dr. Ushaa Eswaran, Principal, SMKFIT, presided over the function. Nearly 120 participants actively participated in the seminar.

In the seminar talk, Dr. Abu said “Telemedicine has aided several aspects of healthcare management including disease diagnosis, decision-making for treatment, privacy and so on”. Dr. Arasu said “Telemedicine in healthcare is an emerging field where researchers from both academia and healthcare professionals have recognized the potential of its impact on improved healthcare that can influence cost efficiency and yet maintain a high quality of care”.

 

        The seminar was a great success, due largely to the considerable efforts of the organizing team which resulted in a lecture that was   both informative and of great interest. Certificates documenting participation were distributed to participants when an individual departed from the seminar. Dr. M. Jagannath, Convenor presented the votes of thanks and congratulated all the participants.
