Bio-Medical Engineering
DEPARTMENT OF BIO-MEDICAL ENGINEERING
dept.of Bio-Medical Engineering

Bio-Medical Engineers apply electrical, mechanical, chemical, optical and other engineering principles to understand, modify or control biological(i.e., human and animal) systems, as well as design and manufacture products thDesignationat can monitor physiological function and assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Bio-medical engineering then is an inter-disciplinary branch of engineering

that ranges from theoretical, to experimental undertakings to the state-of-the-art applications. It can encompass research, development, implementation and operations. For example, a Bio-medical Engineer engaged in the development of a bio-sensor may interact with those interested in prosthetic devices to develop means to detect and use the same bio-electric signal to power a prosthetic device.

The Department is an institutional member of premier organizations in this field – Bio-medical Engineering Society of India (BMESI) and Society for Bio-materials and Artificial Organs (SBAOI), India. The institute has a student chapter of the SBAOI, Chennai chapter with around 30 students as life members. All the students are members of MEDNIC-students Chapter of BMESI and Association of Bio-Medical Engineering at SMKFIT.

CURRICULUM

In the first year at the college, students are introduced to Basic Engineering, Mathematics and Science subjects. This helps them acquire a better understanding of the subjects to be studies in the subsequent semesters, which include:

Medical subjects like Bio-chemistry, Human Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology and Pathology are introduced mainly to understand the basic structure and functions of the human body and the pathologic conditions which form the basis for the Bio-Medical applications.

Basic subjects of Electronics and Communication, have a wide application in bio-signal conditioning and transmission. They include Electronic devices, Circuits and Networks, Analog and Digital Integrated circuits and Principles of Communication.

Signals and systems deals with acquiring the signals, followed by Digital Image Processing which forms the basis for the bio-signal and medical imaging.

The core subjects in Bio-medical Engineering are Bio-sensors, Bio-medical instrumentation, Radiological, Diagnostic and Therapeutic equipments systems used for measuring and interpreting the various data & patients.

Bio-materials deal with materials that can be used in implantation and many features of artificial organs and devices, such as ceramics, polymers, metals, alloys, and composite materials, with the goal of minimizing implant rejection and simulating the body's original Bio-mechanical environment.

The architecture and programming languages – Micro-processors and Computer Architecture deal with areas concerning computer hardware. The various computer software subjects include Visual Programming and Computers in Medicine which help in understanding the applications of computers in the field of medicine.

ELECTIVES

Apart from the core subjects, the students have a choice of selecting any 2 elective subjects from specialty areas like: Bio-mechanics, Neural Networks and its applications, Pattern Recognition, Physiological Modeling, Medical Informatics, Bio-fluids and Dynamics, Medical Imaging Techniques, etc.

In addition, special interest is taken to ensure that practical sessions that are related to the theory papers are conducted at regular intervals. To strengthen the concepts of theory and to provide hands-on experience, practical sessions are provided along with mini projects. In the final year, the students work on projects along with a dissertation.
